Training Needs to Be Specific

Training needs to be specific to the event, such as if you are training for a road race or a trail race, your training needs will be different.  In trail running we use different muscles than in road running.  We need to run trails to train for a trail race because the muscles we use on the trail, as we go over rocks, roots, and streams, cause us to use our tiny little-used muscles, such as the piriformis muscle in our hips.  These tiny muscles used in trail running will not be activated on a treadmill or road running.  If training exclusively on a treadmill for a road marathon, you can have success, but if you train exclusively on a treadmill for a trail race, you’ll likely not be able to go very far, maybe 5 miles or less, until you feel those tiny muscles, that you haven’t worked, screaming and not letting you go on.  You’re legs will get tired and you won’t be able to go on.  You can mix treadmill and trail training, for a trail race, but you have to get out on the trails to train the necessary muscles.  I know I LOVE and prefer trail running, but as we likely all lead busy lives and especially during these winter months, it may not always be possible to get out on the trails as much as we’d like.  I am confident when you know what you need to do for success, you are much more likely to do it.  When something is your passion, it is on your mind always, and you will find a way to get it done.  It doesn’t mean it has to be perfect or exactly what you had planned, but I am confident it will be better and much more productive training than if you did not have all the tools of knowledge necessary to reach your goal.  Learn as much as you can to feel fit forever.

3 Day Adventure

What an awesome 3 days of adventures! As if there could possibly be any other kind of adventures! This girl loves adventure!  I am new to hiking in the Catskills and love these absolutely beautiful mountains.  I have now completed 8 of the 35 peaks in the Catskills.  That means that there are 35 peaks that are 3500 feet or more in the Catskills, although there are many other mountains that are not as high. We have also enjoyed climbing these very much, they are all beautiful and different, yet similar in ways.  The goal is to finish all 35 peaks.  Some peaks we have bushwacked, and others have been on trail, but bushwacking is my favorite.  I started my quest to do the 35 peaks this year, 2018, and am loving these adventures.  They have been like nothing I have ever done before.  There have been every kind of mixed weather and trail conditions imagineable and even some unexpected, as can happen in the mountains.  I love it!  It adds to the adventure.  I have also enjoyed hiking bushwacking in the dark, which is a lot of fun!  It is so freeing, peaceful, yet a feeling of great adventure and magical.  I love how these mountains make me feel like a kid, loving everything about all of it.  Many of these beautiful mountains feel like magical kingdoms you would see in a movie, yet here they are in my real life adventures.  It is an amazing feeling.  I love the challenge of bushwacking up technical terrain to see beauty that not many people can not see.  It is especially evident in the winter, with snow on the ground, if there has been anyone before us, we would be able to see their tracks, yet there are no tracks many places we hike, and to me, this is perfect happiness.  Do what you love to feel fit forever.  #feelfitforever

Snowshoeing Bushwacking Adventures

We had the best time snowshoeing bushwacking yesterday, even though the conditions were challenging, it made it even better!  I love adventure! Yesterday certainly was a grand adventure!  It started out with everything beautifully coated in snow, the trees and roads to get there were completely covered in snow. It sure was gorgeous and exciting.  We even saw snow rollers, which are nature made snowballs.  They are beautiful and were all over the place for about the first mile in the woods when we started out on our adventure.  It got even better with the most beautiful winter wonderland snow covered picture like beauty as we got deeper into the woods.  We surely felt like we were in heaven with smile covered faces and joy in our adventure loving like minded hearts.  But then as we made our ascent up the steep mountain, in our snowshoes, through about 2 feet of snow in spots, it started to snow.  The snow was so very pretty and it added to the magic of the adventure.  But then the snow stopped, and instead it started to rain. It was rain from the snow on the trees melting down onto us from the slightly higher than freezing temps at the time.  Either that, or perhaps it started to rain instead of snow, or both.  We got completley soaked, our heads, hair, faces, all our clothing, everything was soaking wet.  My face, hair, and eyebrows were dripping with water. We were moving very nicely which kept us feeling good, but we knew if we stopped or slowed down, we may succumb to hypothermia due to the wetness. The conditions made the snow ball up on the snowshoes, making it not be able to grip with the claws of the snowshoes like it’s supposed to. My snowshoes stayed pretty clear, most of the time, because I duct taped them beforehand.  It was an amazing feeling to be dripping with wetness from getting soaked unexpectedly in the winter. It felt baddass.  It definitely added to the sense of adventure.  It was my 1st time using such a large snowshoe, 29 1/2″ x 10 1/2″, and they did not disappoint.  I fell instantly in love with them and it felt like they were made specifically for me.  I was told I did very well and that most women are not able to comfortably wear such large snowshoes and that I took them instantly and very naturally.  It sure felt great. Even though the snow conditions were far from ideal for snowshoeing, I was even told that they were the worst conditions for snowshoeing, I did not have a problem with the conditions with my snowshoes. I love my new snowshoes I got as a Christmas present,  I didn’t get to try them until now and cannot wait for our next adventure. The beauty continued as we snowshoed bushwacked up the mountain. Everything was completely covered in snow and some of the trail we broke was steep & potentially dangerous rocks we needed to climb up, that were completely covered with snow, and hard to manuever at spots. It was so much fun!  It was an amazing feeling to be able to do this hike, especially under these conditions.  It was very empowering and soul satisfying.  As we neared the top of the mountain, the peak, the most beautiful evergreen forrest emerged.  We found the canister and signed in, took a quick picture, and headed back down so as to not stand around too long soaking wet in the near freezing temperature.  It was actually several degrees above freezing, but with heavy cloud cover which always makes it feel colder when it is not sunny.  I cannot stop thinking about our grand adventure and will enjoy these wonderful memories for a long time to come.  Live your best life as often as possible and do what you love to feel fit forever.

My ‘Theme Song’ and How to Stay Strong

I LOVE music! I love most kinds of music and I have certain songs that are favorites. These songs seem to remain favorites no matter how long because they still do that ‘special something’ for me.  All of my favorite songs are from very different types of music, and I love the diversity and variety.  One of my all time favorite songs is ‘Ain’t No Stopping Us Now’, by McFadden & Whitehead.  I have many times sung this song to the top of my lungs as I told people who were with me as I was singing, that I feel like this is my ‘theme song’ and that it feels like my life.  I feel like the words in the song relate to my life because I have been through so much, for so long, and they have been extreme situations that most people would never have to go through.

Here are some of the verses to the song: “There’s been so many things that’s held us down, But now it looks like things are finally comin’ around” and “But we won’t let nothin’ hold us back, We’re putting our selves together, We’re polishing up our act! If you felt we’ve been held down before, I know you’ll refuse to be held down anymore! Don’t you let nothing, nothing, Stand in your way! I want ya’ll to listen, listen, To every word I say, every word I say! Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now!” I LOVE these words!

And here is another verse that brings another very important thing to remember: “I know you know someone that has a negative vibe, And if you’re trying to make it they only push you aside, They really don’t have, no where to go, Ask them where they’re going, they don’t know, But we won’t let nothin’ hold us back, We’re gonna put ourselves together, We’re gonna polish up our act! And if you’ve ever been held down before,I know you’ll refuse to be held down anymore! Don’t you let nothing, nothing, Stand in your way!”

This is a very important verse to remember because there will always be people in your life who are negative or toxic to you and it is important to limit yourself from these people and focus on your own goals and positivity and happiness.  Don’t let them drag you down with them.  Don’t let them take your joy away.  Be the example of sunshine and light they need and hopefully this can help them or others.  Be strong and be true to yourself.

The Bible verse Mark 12:30-31 says ‘And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and will all your strength.  The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.

I completely agree with and live my life this way.  To live your life loving your neighbor the way you love yourself and God loves you, means that you absolutely have a pure heart and good intentions, always, for everyone.  It does not mean that if someone has done something evil, scary, or wrong to you that you should go and be their best friend, no you should not be their friend at all, but it does mean that you can pray for them and wish the best for them, but from a safe distance.

You need to utilize common sense for all things in life, yet sadly common sense is not common.  Remember God loves you so much, you are His child, He made you perfect, He made each of us perfect and loves us all the same.  He gave us life to enjoy it and to continually learn and grow in our lives and in our faith. Live this way, as God wants us to, and you will feel fit forever.  #feelfitforever #feelingfitforever

#1 Question: What do you eat?

People are always telling me that I look atleast 10 years younger than I am and that I look so very fit and healthy.  The #1 question I get is how do I do it? People want to know what I eat. I tell them that I eat healthy,  whole foods regularly and that I am always thinking before I put something in my mouth. I ask myself,  is this helping me or hurting me?

Food and drink is our most powerful weapon against and is our most healing tool we have. We have total control over what we eat, yet many people do not utilize this wonderful opportunity,   or not fully utilize it.

It really does matter what foods and drinks you put into your body,  not just the calories and nutrients.  It’s important not to put anything extra in your body, such as a long list of hard to pronounce ingredients found in some so called healthy drinks.

Simple is best. Make a healthy drink yourself.  Get a blender, buy healthy foods, mix up different fun combinations, but don’t add powders that are not whole foods. Keep everything whole and real foods. I generally don’t make myself drinks, I rather eat food,  I love eating healthy. But if you want a healthy drink its always best to make it yourself.

I do not eat sugar, only rarely.

I do not drink alcohol,  only rarely.

I eat throughout the day regularly and do not starve myself.

Many people may not be eating enough food and it may be the reason your not feeling your best, or it can also be the reason your not losing weight if that is your goal.

Eating healthy can significantly increase your ability to stay healthy.  I rarely get sick and have not been sick yet this year or last.

Eating healthy can significantly increase your ability to sleep and sleep well to awake rested and ready for the day.

Eat healthy to feel fit forever.  #feelfitforever #feelingfitforever
